Learning to swim early in life an important safety factor, parents and experts say
Dionne Woody thinks every child should know how to swim. Since age 2, her sons, Jarvis, 3, and James, 5, have had year round lessons at Maley Swim School in Ridgeland.
"I'd say they swim like a fish," says Woody, of Ridgeland. "They ask to go to the deep end."
She and husband James represent a number of local parents who chose to enroll their young kids in swim lessons despite the American Academy of Pediatrics' longtime stance that children ages 1-4 weren't developmentally ready to learn to swim.
In May, however, the AAP updated its guidelines and now says swim lessons for that age group are among a multi-faceted approach parents can take to prevent drowning - the leading cause of injury-related death in children, according to the AAP.
In June, Brent Holmes, 3, of Morton, drowned at Ross Barnett Reservoir during an outing with family and friends.
Such statistic is one reason why Julie Carter, of Pearl, says swimming lessons are a "fierce priority" for sons Joshua, 2, and Chandler, 5, who get a kick out of jumping off a diving board into 8 feet of water at their grandmother's home pool.
"I believe it's just as important as learning to read and write. Whatever it takes. My son would like to play soccer," she says, but Julie and husband Todd chose swimming lessons instead at Maley Swim School.
"He (Joshua) could get out of the swimming pool before he could stand up," says Julie. "That was one of the first things they taught him."
Chandler can now swim the length of the pool and back, and Joshua can swim the width and back. Julie predicts the boys will continue lessons for a couple of years when she's certain they can maintain and retain what they've learned.
Besides swim lessons, the AAP also advises parents to install fences/barriers with locks around pools; get CPR training; know dangers of drain entrapment and hair-entanglement injuries; beware of inflatable and portable pools and always supervise kids - even the ones who already know how to swim.
"There's no substitute for the parents watching," says Kay Crotwell, swim lesson director for The Courthouse Racquet and Fitness locations in the metro area. "Nothing is drown proof. You cannot count on anything but your own eyes."
Not even those plastic arm floaties, Crotwell says. The AAP also addressed the use of the devices by warning parents the air-filled swimming aids can easily deflate. The only recommended device is a life jacket when a child is riding in a watercraft.
Crotwell teaches swimming to toddlers 18 months and older at The Courthouse.
"The little ones are going to cry," Crotwell says, but having lessons that young buys the parents time and helps the child down the road.
"A big benefit is becoming comfortable in the water and knowing limitations," says Beth Clark, pool manager and lifeguard instructor at the Northeast YMCA in Jackson, where lessons for kids ages 3 and 4 are offered.
She advises parents to be in the water with the kids because it encourages them to learn. It is also safer and helps set boundaries such as mandated bathroom breaks to prevent exhaustion. Taking breaks has been proven to reduce the number of drownings, Clark says.
Lessons go beyond teaching kids how to perform strokes. It teaches them to survive.
"When a child is in a state of drowning, they will not call out for help," Clark says. "They are no longer able to prepare."
Parents and instructors also stress having swim lessons for more than a few weeks during a summer break.
"As a parent, I don't believe in short sessions," says Sonja Kerr of Brandon. "I tried a short session when my oldest was 3, and it did nothing."
Just like kids take ballet, piano and other extracurricular activities all year, swimming should not be limited. "Those things can't save your life," says Kerr, whose daughter Poppy, 2, has learned to swim at Maley Swim School.
"Many parents give the two-week obligatory summer swim lessons and check it off their parental to-do list - they've done their duty," says Linda Maley, owner of the swim school in an e-mail to The Clarion-Ledger. She's taught lessons for nearly 40 years. "What parents don't realize is that children forget their swim skills over the school year if swim skills aren't practiced regularly on a consistent basis."
Dionne Woody admits being apprehensive about her boys going all year, particularly during the cold winter months. She feared they might get sick, but says they've had no ill effects.
Lu Lee, 75, of Madison, teaches swimming lessons from April through September in a heated covered pool in her backyard which doubles as her business, Lu Lee Swim School.
To accommodate for lessons offered only six months of the year, Lee, who's taught for 48 years, gives personal videos of a student's lessons on the last day of instruction so parent and child can review.
And, unlike most facilities, she's adamant parents are in the water with the kids during lessons.
"If the parents are not there, they have no idea what these kids are learning," Lee says. "Parents learn to work with them and that's going to make them a lot safer.
"I move very fast with every child and then, when they learn all their strokes, the family keeps working with them."
She offers free, two-week lessons to special needs kids; those whose have a parent in Iraq or Afghanistan; and to those 2 and younger.
And, anyone interested can come to observe her classes.
"This is a mission to help children survive," says Lee.
