Not Just For Kids
Renata Wilson has lived on a lake her whole life. She and her family know how to swim, yet as a result of the tragic accident that recently took the life of her brother, Wilson and several other family members were taking a water safety class with certified swim instructor Heather J. Gruenberg, to make sure that each of them had training in water safety techniques and skills.
“My brother drowned on May 29, and I felt the need to know what to do if someone was ever in trouble in the water again,” said Wilson. “Scott was 44 years old and a good swimmer, but he may have had a seizure in the water.
“I dove in and, with the help of our dad, brought him to shore, but it was too late. I’m here because I believe that everyone who swims should have some idea of how to help someone who is in trouble.”
Gruenberg has provided swim and water safety instruction for people of all ages, infants to adults, for more than two decades.
“Helping adults develop their skills and self-confidence in the water is tremendously rewarding,” she said. “In our area, we are surrounded by water, and we owe it to ourselves to know how to act in and around it. And although many adults make sure their kids know how to swim, they don’t always take the same care with themselves.
Facing fear
“One of the most common reasons adults give for not knowing how to swim is fear,” said Gruenberg. “I’ve met far too many adults who, at some point during their childhood, were thrown into the water by their parents to, literally, swim or sink. This can really scar people, and they need to be re-introduced to the water safely and slowly.
“Some adults may never have had the chance to learn, while others have lived near water all their lives and have paddled around in it a lot, so they feel that ‘official lessons’ aren’t necessary.
“People drown for all sorts of reasons: car or boat accidents, alcohol consumption or illegal drug use while on or in the water, not being prepared for falling in or being thrown in, not knowing how to help themselves should their jet-ski or snowmobile go under the water, being without a life jacket, or not wearing the one they have. But sometimes people do all the right things and the situation goes wrong anyway. It’s sad, but it does happen.” (See Sidebar)
Gruenberg said that adults would most often seek out swimming lessons because they want to conquer their fear and be able to enjoy the water.
“They feel as though they are missing out on a lot of fun they could be having, and they’re right!” She suggests that adults who are beginning swimmers be up front about their needs and goals, and ask potential teachers about their certifications and experience in working with adults.
“If the place you choose doesn’t have a class for adults, ask others if they’d like to be in a group with you and form a class,” she said. “Be persistent! You can change that!”
Gaining confidence
Gruenberg said that, while learning how to swim does not guarantee that one will never drown, it does reduce the chances of having trouble in the water.
“Even brushing up on your skills can add to your self-confidence,” she said.
Wilson said that Gruenberg’s water safety class taught her not only how to be safe in the water, but how to recognize when it’s best not to provide assistance oneself.
“I have always been the parent or grandparent who sits on the beach and reads while the kids swim,” she said. “I no longer am that person; how could I save someone if I never even saw them go down?”
Her brother’s tragic accident has motivated her to encourage others to take swimming and water safety classes.
“God forbid this ever happens to you, but if it does, the feeling that you know what to do is so important – it goes beyond anything you can imagine.”

The USLA has provided some safety tips to help you stay safe in and around the water this summer:
1. Learn to swim: Learning to swim is the best defense against drowning. Children should learn to swim at an early age, as they tend to avoid swim instruction as they age, probably due to embarrassment.
2. Swim near a lifeguard: USLA statistics over a ten year period show that the chance of drowning at a beach without lifeguard protection is almost five times greater than it is for those who swim at a beach where there is a lifeguard.
3. Never swim alone: Many drownings involve single swimmers. Swimming with a buddy means that there is someone with you who may be able to help, or at least to signal for assistance from others. At the very least, have someone onshore watching you.
4. Don’t fight the current: USLA has found that some 80 percent of rescues by USLA affiliated lifeguards at ocean beaches are necessitated by a person having been caught in a rip current. If you are caught in a rip current, don’t fight it by trying to swim directly to shore. Instead, swim parallel to the shore until you feel the current relax, then swim to shore. Most rip currents are narrow, and a short swim parallel to shore will bring you to safety.
5. Swim sober: Alcohol is a major factor in drowning, because it reduces your body temperature and impairs your swimming ability. More importantly, alcohol reduces good judgment; causing people to take risk they might otherwise not take.
6. Leash your board: Surfboards and bodyboards should be used only with a leash, so that you and the board, which could be used a floatation device, do not become separated. A breakaway leash is a good option as it avoids your becoming entangled in underwater obstructions.
7. Don’t float where you can’t swim: Non-swimmers often use floatation devices, like inflatable rafts, to go offshore.
