Drowning is second leading cause of death in children

"They probably couldn't swim ... ," said their sister, Marsha Gaskins, 23. "I bring them out here because it's so hot, but I don't let them go far. I have to make sure nothing happens."
A drowning can happen in a matter of seconds and typically occurs when a child is left unattended. It's the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children ages 1 to 14 and the leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children ages 1 to 4, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The majority of drownings and near drownings occur in residential swimming pools and in open water sites. However, children can drown in as little as one inch of water and are therefore at risk of drowning in wading pools, bathtubs, buckets, diaper pails, toilets, spas and hot tubs.
"Swimming is a need-to-know skill, not a hobby," said Elaine Ramoz, swim instructor at The Swim School in Shreveport. Ramoz, 24, began swimming when she was 6 months old and has taught swim lessons for nearly seven years. "It's something that will save your life. It's vital for everyone to learn."
The phones at The Swim School have been ringing off the hook since Tuesday when word spread that six teens drowned in the Red River while trying to save another child.
The majority of the callers express their sympathy about the tragedy and inquire about swim lessons for adults and children, Ramoz said.
Instructors are seeing more and more adults interested in learning to swim.
Ramoz has taught lessons to adults age 60 and older.
"The phones rang non-stop," Ramoz said. "People are saying how it has really impacted them because it was so close to home. We've since filled our adult class."
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends swim lessons only for children ages 4 and older. However, the organization reports that swim lessons for children ages 1 to 4 could prevent drownings.
Ramoz began swimming at 6 months old and suggests children take swimming lessons as early as possible.
"Everyone should learn to swim, but the earlier the better for sure," Ramoz said. "We have some who begin at 6 months and by the time they are 2 or 3 (years old), they are completely independent and know what to do in an emergency.
"They may not know how to communicate what to do, but they can show you."
The Swim School offers a free 30-minute, interactive water safety presentation that targets children ages 3 to 12. It's one of a few facilities in the Shreveport-Bossier City area that provides year-round lessons.
Shreveport resident Margaret Carthen watched Thursday as her grandchildren swam in the pool at The Swim School. The children, ages 9 and 13, are taking lessons for the first time.
Carthen signed them up after learning the majority of African Americans don't know how to swim.
"They mentioned that, and I realized that I don't know how to swim," Carthen said. "I signed them up for safety reason, but also for social purposes because they are always invited to swim parties.
"They didn't want to swim, and after that terrible tragedy on Monday, I explained to them why I wanted them to learn. And that's why."
