Here at Silver Bear Swim School, kids as young as six months old start to learn the basic techniques of water safety. Turning and grabbing on to the side of the pool is just one of those skills.
Chloe Kauffman's mom says the family loves the outdoors and swimming is part of that.
"Well, I just think there are so many opportunities to be around the water and to have fun there are so many things that could happen, dangers around the water, it is so important," says Summer Kauffman.
Just last week 6 teenagers died in Louisiana after getting caught up in the high waters of the Red River. Parents watched; stunned as they too did not know how to swim.
At Donner Lake, a 15-year-old boy died after jumping off a boat to retrieve his hat five years ago. Family members say he wasn't a strong swimmer.
"It's a life skill," says Tim Hall, co-owner of the Silver Bear Swim School.
Hall has been teaching lessons for years. He says he tries to make it fun for students so they can get over any apprehensions they have about getting into the water.
"We definitely have a lot of parents here who say, ‘I never learned how to swim, I do not want my kid ending up in the same situation,’" says Hall.
But according to studies, that's not necessarily the norm. USA Swimming Foundation Statistics say one of the barriers preventing children from learning to swim is lack of parental encouragement. Other factors point to an availability of swimming facilities and the cost of swimming lessons.
Those barriers can be disastrous.
Of all children's deaths 30% are by drowning. It is the 2nd leading cause of unintentional injury or death for kids 1 to 14 years old.
