Ramona Morris always stayed dry when she took her family swimming at Presque Isle State Park.
She would remain on the beach, or perhaps dip a toe into Lake Erie while her children splashed in the water.
"I'd only go to the edge," Morris said. "Go in the lake? I'm not stupid."
Morris, 50, didn't know how to swim. She's not alone, either.
The USA Swimming Foundation reports that nearly 50 percent of adults either can't swim at all or don't swim well enough to feel safe in deep water. Among African-Americans, that percentage increases to almost 70 percent.
Those are the kinds of statistics that worry Tim Zarnick, director of health and safety for the Erie chapter of the American Red Cross.
"Everybody should know how to swim," Zarnick said. "If you live around here, you will eventually be in the water."
That's what Morris realized after spending decades on the shore. She took swim lessons as a child, but she never really learned how to swim.
"I was afraid to go under water," Morris said. "I never learned how to breathe while I swam."
Determined to learn how to swim so that she could swim for exercise, Morris went to the Glenwood YMCA and signed up for adult swim lessons.
About a dozen adults take swim lessons during each eight-week session, said Ledys Negron, a Glenwood YMCA water and fitness instructor.
"A difference between children learning to swim and adults is that the adults usually bring a lot of fear of the water," Negron said. "The first thing they have to learn is to be comfortable in the water."
Otherwise the swim classes are similar to the ones held for children.
Negron's and the other instructors' first goal is to get the would-be swimmers to put their faces in the water and blow bubbles.
"It's about being in the water and enjoying the water," Negron said. "Once they learn that, then we can progress to the other things, like swim strokes."
Morris started her classes in June and said she has enjoyed every minute of them.
Negron, her instructor, formed a bond with Morris right away that helped her feel comfortable.
"I relaxed and I trusted her almost right away," Morris said. "It helped."
Morris learned how to roll her shoulders and grab a breath as she swam, then learned how to make turns.
"I can swim in the deep end of the (lap) pool, but I'm not really comfortable there yet," Morris said. "The smaller pool doesn't bother me none."
Some adults learn to swim quickly, while others take longer, Zarnick said.
"It can take years, just like it does with children," said Zarnick, who learned to swim as a young adult after he joined the Air Force. "You have to be willing to make a commitment."
Morris seems committed. A couple of months after her first swim class in 40 years, Morris is swimming three to four days a week at the Glenwood YMCA.
"It's coming more quickly than I thought it would," Morris said. "It's a great feeling."
